RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Caravan Farm Theatre’s Residency Program serves professional and emerging theatre companies and collectives by providing a retreat-like setting in which to write, devise and develop their work. Participants will have access to eighty acres of secluded fields and forests, a large wood-heated rehearsal hall, three covered outdoor structures of varying sizes and shapes, as well as a kitchen, dining area, washroom and bathing facilities to care for the company. You also have the option of accessing dramaturgical support from Artistic and Environmental Programs Manager Vicki Stroich during your residency. 

Residencies can last up to two weeks and available times are dependent on Caravan Farm Theatre’s production schedule. April, May and September are usually the months with the most availability. There is space for up to 12 artists to be in residence.

Each company will be adjudicated with value placed on their capacity to offer exchange with the local artistic community. These exchanges can be in the form of an “invite only” performance of a work in progress, a round-table discussion, master classes, an instagram takeover, or another way of engaging with your work that is light and easy for you to manage within the scope of your residency. In whichever way you wish to share, the intent is to promote cross-pollination between local and visiting artists, for mutual benefit of each. 

The size and scope of the project will also be taken into consideration during the selection process, as well as Caravan’s ability to support the work.

In an effort to help rebalance longstanding social inequities across our sector, there will be a high priority placed on applications from IBPOC theatre companies, the DisArts Community, 2SLGBTQIA+ and female/gender-diverse led theatre companies. Caravan Farm Theatre is a national resource for Canadian Theatre artists and artists from across Canada are welcome to apply but travel to the Farm will be the responsibility of the applicant.

Applicants will be asked to submit:

A Project Description to tell us a little about what you are working on (500 words)

A short statement of how your company might offer exchange with with the local artistic community (250 words)

A Company History to tell us a little about yourselves (500 words)

Supporting Materials (ie. photos, video, etc of your previous work)

Applications for residency in 2024 will open in September 2023 and close in November 2023. Successful applicants will be notified in December 2023.

SOLO RESIDENCIES

If you are a solo artist looking for some space to create, we may be able to accommodate you at the Caravan alongside our other programing. We encourage artists of all mediums to reach out; whether you are a performance artist, actor, writer or visual artist a solo residency may be for you. The size and scope of available space will vary depending on our calendar.
