Our Indigenous Film Festival has been rescheduled to June 27, 28 & 29, 2025. We’ve decided to permanently move the Indigenous film festival to a more hospitable time of the year. We originally programmed our Film Festival in mid August to take advantage of the balmy summer evenings, since programming a large scale theatre production had been proving too risky, but after three years of being smoked out or otherwise impacted by neighborhood fires, we think it’s finally time to move this event to a more reliable time of the year. Plus, by programming this event the week after National Indigenous Peoples Day, we hope to add to the general festivities and provide our community with multiple ways in which to recognize and celebrate Indigenous culture and creativity.
We are excited to plan for this early summer Indigenous film festival, and look forward to a splashy return in 2025!

Our Festival opener is a new film by Caravan Farm Theatre alumnus Corey Payette!
LES FILLES DU ROI (The King’s Daughters) is the powerful story of a young girl, Kateri and her brother Jean-Baptiste whose lives are disrupted upon the arrival of les filles du roi in ‘New France’ (now Montreal) in 1665. They forge an unlikely relationship with the young fille Marie-Jeanne Lespérance – whose dream of a new life is more complicated than she could have imagined. Over the course of a year, Mohawk, French and English journeys collide, setting the stage for the Canada we know today.

The Great Salish Heist is a scrappy indie Ocean’s 11 with bags of charm and some authentic things to say about cultural colonialism. The Great Salish Heist manages to pull off its engaging premise with panache, aided immensely by a standout cast.
Three short films will be chosen from submissions gathered from across Turtle Island to precede the three feature films of our festival.
The selection panel consists of our annual panelists Bill Cohen (Syilx Okanagan) researcher, educator and artist, who has been sharing his deep passion for transformative and revitalizing works with Indigenous communities for over 25 years, and Aaron Leon (Secwepemc) an artist, community activist and academic currently researching Indigenous knowledge-keeping in a digital age. Our guest panelist is Tara Beagan.
Tara Beagan is a proud Ntlaka’pamux and Irish “Canadian” halfbreed. She is cofounder/director of ARTICLE 11 with Andy Moro and based in Mohkinstsis (Calgary.) Their feature film Reckoning will premiere in 2023.Beagan served as Artistic Director of Native Earth Performing Arts from February 2011 to December 2013. Beagan has been in residence at Cahoots Theatre, NEPA, the National Arts Centre, Berton House, and most recently Prairie Theatre Exchange. Seven of her 35 plays are published. Two plays have received Toronto’s Dora Award nominations, one win. In 2020, Honour Beat won the Gwen Pharis Ringwood Award for Drama. Recent writing includes Rise, Red River for PTE (premiering in 2024 with PTE, Theatre Circle Moliere and A11), Nice White Lady for Necessary Angel, and Ride or Die for Sunny Drake Productions, produced by Downstage.
Beagan is a Dora and Betty nominated actor, recently appearing in Theatre Calgary’s Little Women as well as Vertigo’s The Extractionist. Most recently Beagan was nominated for directing her play The Ministry of Grace for Making Treaty 7. Along with protégé Joelle Peters, Beagan is the 2020 laureate of the Siminovitch Prize for Theatre.
